Deising's Bakery & Restaurant | Our Story

Three generations of Old World baking in the Hudson Valley

Three generations of Old World baking in the Hudson Valley

Deising's started with two people, a dream, and a New York Times classified ad. Over six decades later, it's still family-run — and still baking everything fresh every single day.
How it all started

How it all started

It all started in 1960, when Ingrid and Uwe Deising left their hometown of Hamburg, Germany, and moved to the United States in search of the American dream. Although they both grew up in Hamburg, they didn’t meet until they were living on Long Island. They quickly fell in love, married, and started a family. Baking was Uwe’s passion. At just 22 years old, he became the youngest person at the time to earn the title of Certified Master Baker in Germany. Ingrid graduated with honors from Schlankreye International Business College in Germany and had a passion of her own: cooking. Her dream was to one day open a café. After spending five years working in bakeries and restaurants on Long Island, Ingrid and Uwe came across an advertisement in The New York Times for a bakery for sale in Kingston, New York. Just four days later, they purchased Ketterer’s Bakery and began building what would eventually become Deising’s Bakery & Restaurant. After 15 years of operating as Ketterer’s Bakery, they purchased a vacant former Goodyear Tire Repair Center in Uptown Kingston. The larger building gave Uwe the space he needed to expand the bakery and gave Ingrid the opportunity to finally open the café she had always dreamed of. Ingrid’s homemade soups and sandwiches quickly became so popular that the café outgrew its original space. The family eventually purchased the two neighboring buildings, which today house our restaurant and catering rooms.
Where we stand today

Where we stand today

Today, Deising’s operates as a retail and wholesale bakery, breakfast and lunch restaurant, and catering company serving the Hudson Valley. Over the years, we have been honored with numerous awards, including “Best Breakfast in the Hudson Valley,” “Best Cookies in the Hudson Valley,” and “Small Business of the Year” from the Ulster Regional Chamber of Commerce. One of our proudest achievements was being named “Retail Bakery of the Year” by Modern Baking Magazine. At Deising’s, our products are baked fresh daily using recipes passed down through our family, along with recipes we have collected from around the world. We use only the finest and freshest ingredients available, including many imported from Europe, allowing us to recreate the authentic flavors and desserts of the Old World. Uwe and Ingrid retired in 1999, but they left their children a strong foundation on which to build. Today, the third generation of the Deising family is proud to continue that tradition.
Now in its third generation

Now in its third generation

Uwe and Ingrid retired in 1999, but the business they built has kept growing through their family, now into its third generation of ownership. The mission they set hasn't changed: high-quality baked goods, genuine hospitality, and fair prices — for every customer, every time.
Community & Recognition

Community & Recognition

being part of the Hudson Valley community means so much more than serving great food. Since 1965, we've taken pride in giving back to the neighbors, families, and organizations that have supported us for generations. From supporting local schools, youth sports teams, and charitable fundraisers to donating baked goods, gift certificates, and meals to those in need, we believe in making a positive difference in the community we call home. Our commitment to quality and service has also earned us numerous honors over the years, including Best Retail Bakery in America (1984), Ulster County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year (2014), and Sweetest Bakery in New York (2018), along with multiple recognitions for Best Bakery, Best Breakfast, and Best Cookies in the Hudson Valley. While we're incredibly proud of these achievements, our greatest reward remains the trust and loyalty of our customers and the opportunity to give back to the community that has supported us for over six decades. Thank you for allowing us to continue Baking Memories Since 1965.
